When the Dance Maniax / Dance Freaks series was first conceived, it was heralded as being the next step up from the Dance Dance Revolution Series.
Rather than controlling the game with four pressure foot pads, this machines comprises a total of eight sets of sensors - four for the legs and four for the hands. Featuring a similar style of gameplay to the DDR machines, the Dance Maniax / Dance Freaks series features coloured balls that float up the screen towards a bar at the top, with the player activating the sensor at the exact moment the balls reach this bar.
To activate a sensor, the player must move their hand or leg through the air in between either of two sensors. At the end of the session a player is rated and if they have made too many mistakes then they will not progress to the next stage.
